ZEBRA

Who we are, what we do, what we stand for

ZEBRA was founded in 1986 as an association in Graz. In 1987 – 22 years ago –, ZEBRA began with its work. ZEBRA considers itself as a NGO (Non Govermental Organisation), that is independent and ecumenical. The people who founded ZEBRA had been campaigning for human rights, especially with Amnesty International (AI).

The aims of the organisation – in the past as well as in the present – are:

full realization of human rights
encouragement of equal treatment and long-term integration
ostracizing torture and the rehabilitation of persons having survived political violence
fighting racism

Offers

At ZEBRA we have developed an interdisciplinary approach that works on different levels, i.e. on juridical, social, political, medical, psychotherapeutical, psychiatrical levels. Our aim is to establish equal opportunities (on the labour market, in the area of education) that are necessary for long-term integration.

Target groups of ZEBRA's counselling and psycho-social services are:

people seeking asylum and refugees (according to the Geneva Convention)
victims of torture and severely traumatized persons
work migrants and their family members

Information and coaching

Besides, ZEBRA establishes itself as a competence center and education provider, especially in the fields of counselling and coaching organisations. Thereby we try to promote the intercultural opening process as well es diversity management. In addition to that, ZEBRA regularly organizes congresses, seminars und conferences with international participation. Since 1991, ZEBRA has been publishing a magazine called "zebratl".

Milestones in the history of ZEBRA

Here's a short list, representing the various highlights in 22 years of ZEBRA:

In 1995, the "zebratl" editorial team received the Styrian price for journalistic achievement for their third-world reporting.
1997/98: Among other organisations, ZEBRA managed to bring the exhibition "Verbrechen der Wehrmacht" (crimes of the German Armed Forces in World War II) to Graz and organized a variety of advanced education courses around the exhibition.
In 2000 ZEBRA received the 2nd European Health Promotion Award
In 2007 ZEBRA was granted with the Styrian Human Rights Award
